Diabetes is far more widespread and prevalent than one would anticipate. What’s more shocking when it comes to something that we all think is harmful, is the fact that diabetes is a major cause of kidney failure, blindness, heart attacks and stroke to the extent that in 2019 diabetes was the ninth leading cause of death with an estimate of 1.5 million deaths only caused by diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease or rather a condition that occurs when your blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is known to be the main source of energy and it comes from food that one consumes. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps glucose from food penetrate the cells to be used for energy.

However, sometimes the body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use enough insulin which in turn leads to glucose staying in your blood and not reaching your cells. Over a course of time, having too much glucose in the blood can cause health problems and this condition is known as diabetes. While there is no definite root cure for diabetes, age-old traditional and natural Ayurvedic methods have proven to help one maintain blood sugar levels and stay healthy.

There are two kinds of Diabetes that a person can be detected with:

Type 1 Diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 2 Diabetes:

In Type 2 diabetes, there is a lifestyle disorder that develops when your body can’t produce the required amount of insulin or when it becomes resistant to insulin. Hence, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being utilized for energy.

Ayurveda and Diabetes:

Ayurveda found the existence of diabetes back in 1000BC itself, a mention of which has been made in the Charaka Samhita.

Charak Samhita describes numerous reasons that can lead to diabetes, Madhumedha being one of the eight significant disorders that are challenging to treat. Diabetes according to Ayurveda and western medicine is caused by diet, lifestyle, environment as well as genetic factors.

Types of Diabetes as defined by Ayurveda are:

  • Sampraptivishishta Anilatmaka Madhumeha
  • Dhatukshayajanya Madhumeha
  • Avritapathata (Avaranjanya) Madhumeha
  • Kala Prabhavaja Madhumeha

Following are a few ayurveda herbs that can reduce the intensity of diabetes in the body:

It reduces blood sugar levels by enhancing the level of insulin in the body.

#2 – Haritaki:

It is a well-researched act that the production of insulin from the pancreatic B-cells becomes active when Haritaki is consumed.
